National Awards 2023

The National Film Awards, established in 1954, hold a rich history as a prestigious recognition in Indian cinema. Organized by the Directorate of Film Festivals under the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, these awards celebrate exceptional cinematic achievements. Initially known as the “State Awards,” the event expanded over the years, recognizing best films across regional languages. Notably, the inaugural Best Feature Film winner was Marathi’s “Shyamchi Aai.” Among the notable awardees, the film “Lagaan” earned eight honors in 2002, retaining the most awarded status in the history of these awards. The National Film Awards not only applaud aesthetic and technical excellence but also underline cinema’s social relevance and its powerful impact. The awards ceremony not only honors outstanding films but also pays tribute to industry legends through the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime achievement, with superstar Rajinikanth being the previous year’s recipient.
