CBSE to Conduct Class 10 Board Exams Twice a Year Starting 2026: Key Details
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant change to its assessment system for Class 10 students. Starting in 2026, the board will conduct Class 10 board examinations twice a year, providing students with increased flexibility and reduced exam stress. This decision aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes student-centric learning and assessment practices.
Bi-Annual Examination Schedule
According to the newly proposed draft guidelines, the first session of the Class 10 board exams will be held from February 17 to March 6, 2026, followed by the second session scheduled from May 5 to May 20, 2026. Both exam phases will cover the entire syllabus, ensuring that the evaluation standards remain consistent across sessions.
Key Points:
- Students can choose to appear in either or both exam sessions.
- They may select specific subjects for the retake in the May session.
- The draft norms are open for public feedback until March 9, 2025, allowing stakeholders to share their views before finalization.
No Separate Supplementary Exams
Under the new system, CBSE has done away with traditional supplementary exams. Instead, the May session will serve as a second chance for students to improve their scores. The board has clarified that there will be no special exams offered beyond the scheduled sessions, emphasizing the need for students to make the most of these opportunities.
Practical and Internal Assessments
CBSE plans to conduct practical and internal assessments only once during the academic year. This streamlined approach will simplify the evaluation process while maintaining the integrity of practical assessments.
The final marksheet and passing certificate will be issued after the May exams, showcasing:
- Scores from both exam sessions, if applicable.
- The highest score achieved in each subject, ensuring students receive the best possible outcome.

Aligning with NEP 2020 Principles
The shift to bi-annual board exams is a move in line with the NEP 2020, which aims to create a student-friendly evaluation system. By offering multiple opportunities to appear for exams, CBSE seeks to reduce academic pressure and promote a fair and flexible assessment process. This approach encourages students to learn at their own pace and maximizes their chances of academic success.
Feedback and Final Policy Implementation
The draft policy is currently open for suggestions, and CBSE invites all stakeholders to provide their feedback before the March 9, 2025 deadline. The final exam policy will incorporate these inputs to ensure a balanced and effective assessment framework.
For more details and updates, students and parents are advised to keep an eye on the official CBSE website.
