About the Defence Technology Minor Degree

The newly introduced Minor Degree in Defence Technology is designed to give engineering students specialized exposure to modern defence systems, innovations, and applications.

The curriculum includes subjects such as:

  • Missile Systems, Drones, and Advanced Aeronautics
  • Naval Technology & Marine Systems
  • Weapon Design and Combat Technologies
  • Cybersecurity & Digital Defence
  • Advanced and Strategic Materials

The program will also feature seminars, practical projects, field visits, and industry collaboration to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world defence applications.

Developed with Support from Defence Experts

The curriculum was developed in consultation with:

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)
  • Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force)
  • Defence manufacturing industries and academic experts
  • Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM)

According to AICTE Chairman T.G. Sitharam, this initiative aligns with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) by preparing skilled professionals for India’s growing defence ecosystem.

Why This Matters for Engineering Students

This initiative marks a major step in connecting academia with the national defence sector.

Key benefits include:

  • Direct career pathways into DRDO, defence PSUs, and armed forces technical branches
  • Specialized skills in defence R&D and innovation
  • Enhanced employability in emerging areas like AI in Defence, Cyberwarfare, and Autonomous Systems
  • Opportunities for internships, research projects, and collaborative programs with defence institutions

AICTE has encouraged top engineering institutes across India to adopt this minor degree program to nurture the next generation of defence innovators.

 Conclusion

The Defence Technology Minor Degree bridges a crucial gap between engineering education and national defence needs. With this program, students can now align their academic goals with India’s mission of technological self-reliance and contribute directly to strengthening the country’s defence capabilities.
