India Creates History: Deepti & Shafali Power India to Maiden ICC Women’s World Cup Title 2025

India scripted history at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium by clinching their first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final.

After posting 298/7, India bowled out South Africa for 246, thanks to all-round brilliance from Deepti Sharma (5/39 & 58) and Shafali Verma (87 & 2 wickets).

 India’s Dominant Batting Display

Put in to bat first, India’s openers Shafali Verma (87) and Smriti Mandhana (45) gave a flying start with a 100-run partnership. Jemimah Rodrigues (39) and Richa Ghosh (34) kept the scoreboard ticking, while Deepti Sharma’s composed 58 off 63 balls ensured India reached a competitive total of 298.

South Africa’s Ayabonga Khaka led their bowling attack with 3 wickets, while Mlaba, de Klerk, and Tryon chipped in with one each.

South Africa’s Brave Chase Falls Short

Chasing 299, South Africa began strongly through Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt, adding 50 runs in the powerplay. Wolvaardt’s brilliant 101 kept Proteas hopes alive, but a dramatic collapse triggered by Deepti Sharma turned the tide.

From 209/5, South Africa were bowled out for 246, losing five wickets for just 37 runs.

Deepti’s double breakthrough in one over — dismissing Wolvaardt and Chloe Tryon — sealed the game for India.

Match-Turning Moments

  • Amanjot Kaur’s direct hit ran out Tazmin Brits early.
  • Shafali Verma’s twin strikes removed Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp.
  • Deepti Sharma’s 5-wicket spell dismantled South Africa’s middle order.
  • Harmanpreet Kaur’s catch ended South Africa’s innings — and began India’s celebrations.

Player of the Match – Deepti Sharma

For her all-round heroics — 58 runs and 5 wickets — Deepti Sharma was rightfully crowned Player of the Match, while Shafali Verma’s explosive batting earned her the Player of the Tournament honour.

An Emotional Victory for India

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur held back tears as she lifted the trophy, saying:

“This moment belongs to every Indian girl who ever dreamed of playing for her country. We did it together — as sisters, as fighters, as champions.”
