The “Stipend Upgrade”: More Support for Your Science

One of the most exciting updates is the revised financial package designed to let researchers focus entirely on their work without financial stress.

  • JRF Monthly Stipend: ₹37,000 per month for the first two years.
  • SRF Monthly Stipend: On successful upgradation, your stipend jumps to ₹42,000 per month for the 3rd year onwards.
  • Annual Contingency Grant: An additional ₹20,000 per year to cover research-related expenses.
  • Direct Benefit: All payments are processed via an online portal, ensuring transparency and timely disbursement directly to the scholar.

Mission Profile: Eligibility & Age Limits

The program is open to bonafide Indian citizens with a stellar academic record. Here is the breakdown:

  • Academic Bar: * Master’s Degree: Minimum 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD/Third Gender).
    • 4-Year Bachelor’s: Minimum 75% marks (70% for reserved categories).
  • Age Limit (JRF): Not more than 30 years as of the month the exam concludes.
  • Age Relaxations: Up to 5 years for Women, SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD/Third Gender, and those with relevant research or armed forces experience.
  • No Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for those applying for Assistant Professor or PhD Admission only.

The “Road to PhD”: Registration & Tenure

Success in the CSIR fellowship requires careful planning of your academic timeline:

  1. PhD Registration: You must register for your PhD within two years of receiving your JRF-NET certificate.
  2. Upgradation (JRF to SRF): After two years, a Three-Member Assessment Committee will review your progress. If your work is satisfactory, you transition to a Senior Research Fellowship (SRF).
  3. Total Tenure: The total duration of the fellowship (JRF + SRF) cannot exceed five years.
  4. Full-Time Commitment: Fellows are expected to be full-time researchers. However, you are permitted to take up temporary teaching/research jobs for up to one year during your tenure (with prior approval).

Leave & Benefits: Supporting the Researcher

CSIR recognizes that researchers are human too. The revised guidelines include:

  • Standard Leave: 30 days of leave with stipend per year.
  • Maternity/Paternity Leave: Women fellows are entitled to 180 days of maternity leave with full stipend, while male fellows can avail 15 days of paternity leave.
  • HRA & Accommodation: Hostel accommodation is encouraged; where unavailable, House Rent Allowance (HRA) is provided as per host institution rules.

Important Pro-Tips for Aspirants

  • Acknowledge CSIR: Always mention CSIR support in your publications. Failing to do so can jeopardize your extension!
  • Online Portal Mastery: All claims—from monthly attendance to annual contingency—are now handled via the CSIR HRDG Portal. Stay in touch with your institute’s “Maker/Checker” officer to ensure timely submissions.
  • Progress is Key: Submit your annual reports within six months of completing each year. Delays in reports lead to delays in money!

Your research has the power to change lives. With the new CSIR JRF guidelines, the Government of India is ensuring you have the resources to make it happen.
