UPSC Prelims: Last 5 Years’ Question Papers — Download & Prepare Smartly
The UPSC conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) annually. The first stage — the Prelims — consists of two objective-type papers: General Studies Paper I (GS-1) and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT / GS-II). Clearing Prelims is mandatory to qualify for the Mains exam, though Prelims marks don’t count toward the final selection.
Downloading and practising previous years’ Prelims question papers helps aspirants understand the exam pattern, manage time better, and improve accuracy under exam conditions.

Why Solve Previous Years’ Papers?
- Familiarity with Exam Pattern & Difficulty: Helps you understand the structure, question types, and marking scheme of both GS-1 and CSAT.
- Time Management & Practice Under Real Conditions: Simulating exam conditions improves speed and reduces stress.
- Concept Clarity & Revision: Repeated practice reinforces core concepts across syllabus: history, polity, geography, environment, economy, general science, etc.
- Improved Accuracy & Decision-Making: Helps with elimination strategy, negative marking awareness, and careful attempt management.
- Self-Assessment & Progress Tracking: Comparing your answers with official papers helps you identify strengths/weaknesses and plan revision strategy.
How to Use Past Question Papers in Your Preparation
- Start by attempting GS-1 papers from older years first (e.g. 2020 → 2024) to build conceptual clarity.
- Simulate actual exam conditions — strict time limit per paper (e.g. 2 hours), no interruptions, negative marking awareness.
- After each session, analyze your performance: check answers, note weak topics, revise accordingly.
- Use CSAT papers to build aptitude skills — reading comprehension, reasoning, numerical ability, data interpretation.
- Track progress over time — as you solve more papers, gradually increase accuracy and reduce time.
