Videsh Siksha Bruti — New Abroad Study Scholarship for SC / ST Students by Government of Odisha

The Odisha government has launched the Videsh Siksha Bruti scheme to support SC/ST students pursuing PG or PhD studies abroad.

 What is Videsh Siksha Bruti

  • The scheme is launched by the Odisha government to enable meritorious students from Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities to pursue postgraduate (PG) or doctoral (PhD) studies abroad.
  • It starts from the 2025–26 academic session.

✅ Who Is Eligible

  • The student must belong to SC or ST category.
  • The family’s annual income must be ₹12 lakh or below.
  • The student must have secured admission to a post‑graduate or PhD programme at a foreign university/institution ranked within the Top 200 globally (QS World University Rankings).

🎓 What It Offers — Benefits & Selection

  • Selected candidates receive financial assistance of up to ₹25 lakh per year. This amount is meant to cover tuition fees, living expenses and other academic costs abroad.
  • Each year, 50 students will be awarded the scholarship.
  • The 50 slots – as per streams — are distributed as:
    • 10 students from Engineering & Technical Education (4 PG + 6 PhD)
    • 10 from Medical, Agriculture, Architecture and allied fields (4 PG + 6 PhD)
    • 30 from general higher education and other PG/PhD courses (10 PG + 20 PhD)
  • The scholarship will assist in tuition as well as living costs, easing the financial burden of studying abroad for deserving SC/ST students.

📝 Application & Timeline

  • Applications will be invited twice a year: July–August and December–January.
  • Eligible SC/ST students who meet income and admission‑criteria (PG/PhD + Top‑200 university) should watch for official notifications from the Higher Education Department, Odisha.

  • Alongside launching this scholarship, the government also issued appointment letters to 34 candidates for Group C and D posts across aided colleges (as part of rehabilitation assistance).
  • The scheme also goes hand‑in‑hand with reforms under the Odisha State Higher Education Council (OSHEC), which recently got the authority to conduct performance audits of higher‑education institutions — a first for any state in India.
