Gandhari Movie Review: Taapsee Pannu’s Fierce Performance Powers This Dark Thriller

Taapsee Pannu returns with another intense, action-driven role in Gandhari, a dark thriller that combines a mother’s desperate search for her missing daughter with the disturbing world of child trafficking. Directed by Devashish Makhija and written by Kanika Dhillon, the film takes a serious social issue and places it inside a revenge-filled thriller.

The story follows Bani, a mother whose life turns upside down after her daughter goes missing. What begins as a frantic search gradually takes her into a dangerous network connected to child trafficking. As Bani gets closer to the truth, her determination turns into rage, pushing the story towards a darker and more violent path.

Taapsee Pannu Is the Film’s Biggest Strength

Taapsee Pannu carries much of Gandhari on her shoulders. Her portrayal of a mother driven by fear, anger and desperation gives the film its strongest emotional moments.

The physicality of her performance also adds weight to the action sequences. Bani is not presented as a conventional action hero; her strength comes from her determination to find her daughter at any cost.

However, the writing sometimes struggles to give the character the emotional depth that the subject demands. The intensity is certainly there, but some scenes feel more designed to create shock than genuine emotional impact.

A Powerful Subject, Uneven Execution

The biggest strength of Gandhari is also its biggest challenge. Child trafficking is a deeply disturbing and important subject, but the film occasionally relies too heavily on thriller conventions.

The first half builds curiosity effectively, particularly as Bani begins uncovering the darker side of the world around her. The tension, however, becomes less consistent as the story progresses, with some twists feeling predictable and certain developments stretching credibility.

This is also where the film falls short of its potential. The subject could have supported a much more emotionally devastating thriller, but the screenplay doesn’t always maintain that intensity.

Direction and Performances

Devashish Makhija attempts to give Gandhari a gritty and serious atmosphere, while Kanika Dhillon’s screenplay keeps the focus on revenge, motherhood and trafficking.

Taapsee remains the standout performer, while the supporting cast contributes to the film without overshadowing the central character.

The action sequences work reasonably well, but the film is more effective when it focuses on Bani’s emotional journey than when it tries to become a larger-than-life revenge spectacle.

Final Verdict

Gandhari is a watchable thriller with a strong central performance and an important subject at its core. Taapsee Pannu once again proves that she can convincingly carry physically demanding and emotionally intense roles.

But despite its promising premise, the film doesn’t completely live up to its potential. The uneven screenplay and occasional lack of believability prevent it from becoming the hard-hitting thriller it could have been.

Watch it if: You enjoy gritty revenge thrillers, intense female-led performances and socially relevant stories.

Skip it if: You are looking for a tightly written, highly realistic thriller with consistently strong emotional depth.
